Polynesia’s written records and oral tradition show plenty references to Monoi (the Reo Maohi word for fragranced oil) Besides being used in cosmetics, massages or ointments,
it is also mentioned in association with religious rituals
French Polynesia is made up of 5 archipelagos (Société, Tuamotu, Gambiers, Australes et Marquises) counting 120 islands and spanning a total area comparable to that of Europe.

Heavenly waters, atolls and volcanic islands are home to a formidable variety of plants – and indeed some varieties found nowhere else on the planet.
This wealth of vegetation in the middle of an otherwise blue desert is raising many question. Some think the atoll draw nutritious substances from the ocean’s depths. (Orstom Institute’s scientists Rougerie and Waulty explain this as a phenomenon called endo-upwelling: interstitial waters are drawn by thermoconvection through coral reefs to the surface, bringing the nutritious salts needed by the ecosystem).
Monoi derive its exceptional properties from this unique environment.
